Behavior Belongs in Shelter Medicine: The Shelter Vet's Role in Behavioral and Emotional Health

Date & Time: Wednesday, January 21, 2026. 4-5 PM PST

Host: Jennifer Bennett (host), DVM, MS (Behavioral Neuroscience), CAWA

Guests: Cynthia Delany, DVM, KPA-CTP, Emilia Gordon, DVM, DABVP (Shelter Medicine Practice), Sarah Mantovani, DVM, MS (Shelter Medicine)

In this Shelter Medicine Live session, we will look at how the behavior and emotional health of dogs and cats in shelters connect to their overall well being. Instead of focusing only on medical tests and treatments, we will talk about how animals act, how they are feeling in the shelter environment, and how that fits into daily care decisions for the whole team.

Together, we will explore how veterinarians and other members of the shelter team can notice changes in behavior and respond in ways that better support animals who may be stressed or struggling. The conversation will touch on real life shelter experiences, everyday choices that affect behavior and comfort, and ways to help animals move more successfully from the shelter into homes and ongoing veterinary care. This session is for anyone involved in shelter animal care who wants a clearer, big-picture view of where behavior fits into modern shelter medicine.
