Worth the Rounds: How This Daily Practice Saves Time and Improves Care

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · 4–5 PM Pacific

Burns. Broken bones. Bleeding. Bite wounds. When your team calls on you to assess an animal in distress, how do you determine your next steps?

Join host Dr. Jenn Bennett and guests Dr. Cindy Karsten and Dr. Zarah Hedge for a conversation on holding population and medicine rounds in shelters - how we organize and conduct them, who participates, what we do with the information, the physical aspects and the tasks associated with the topic. Rounds are considered a "MUST" in the ASV guidelines yet many shelters do not hold them or do not think they have time to hold them. We maintain that holding them actually saves time, prevents LOS bottlenecks, and increases good communication across shelter teams.

By the end of this hour, participants will be better prepared to:

  • Discuss the differences between population rounds and medicine rounds, when to do each and why each is necessary
  • Determine who needs to be included in daily rounds
  • Plan what information needs to be collected and shared
