Along the way, you’ll explore how Fear Free® principles fit within a larger framework of calm, organized, and compassionate animal care. You’ll also sharpen your use of protocols, SOPs, and shelter software so the right care and data flow seamlessly together. Designed for busy shelter teams, this course helps you provide excellent care with confidence and consistency—without slowing the day down.

Welfare Focus Electives

Behavior, Training, and Enrichment

Behavior, Training, and Enrichment

Bring out the best in every animal. Behavior, Training, and Enrichment helps you understand what animals need to feel safe, learn, and thrive—so you can make every interaction a step toward calmer, happier, more adoptable pets.

Every moment in the shelter shapes how animals feel and behave. This course helps you turn daily care and interactions into opportunities for comfort, learning, and trust. You’ll discover how to recognize and respond to body language, reduce fear and frustration, and use enrichment and training techniques that truly make a difference.

You’ll explore how Fear Free® concepts, good housing, and consistent routines work together to create a calmer, safer environment for both animals and staff. You’ll also practice simple ways to document and share behavior observations, so your team can make informed, compassionate decisions that improve outcomes.

Whether you’re cleaning kennels, greeting adopters, or helping with training, this course will give you the tools and confidence to support emotional wellbeing—and help animals move from stress to success.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Modern Sheltering Foundations (MSF) and Animal Care Foundations (ACF).

Offered 2–3 times per year.
Population Management

Population Management

See the bigger picture behind daily shelter work. Population Management helps you understand how your role shapes animal flow, capacity, and outcomes—so you can make small daily choices that keep animals moving safely through the system.

Every animal’s journey depends on how the whole team works together. In this course, you’ll learn what “population management” really means in daily shelter life—and how your everyday actions directly affect how long animals stay, how healthy they are, and whether they reach the right outcome.

You’ll explore how Capacity for Care and the 4 Rights of Animal Sheltering connect to intake decisions, housing choices, daily monitoring, and record-keeping. You’ll see how data like length of stay and animal counts help identify where animals are getting “stuck,” and how simple communication and follow-up steps can keep them moving forward.

Through realistic examples and interactive tools, you’ll build confidence using your shelter software, contributing to population rounds, and recognizing when something needs attention before it becomes a problem. By the end, you’ll know how to help animals get the right care, in the right place, at the right time—while helping your team work more efficiently and with less stress.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Modern Sheltering Foundations (MSF) and Animal Care Foundations (ACF).

Offered 2–3 times per year.
